Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
