Cyclone the storm Gains Power While Heads Towards the Island Nation

The hurricane has impacted Haiti and the Dominican Republic

Hurricane the storm is forecast to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it shifts toward Jamaica, causing life-threatening rapid inundation and landslides.

The cyclone, which had winds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, according to meteorological authorities.

Alerts of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been released as the hurricane produces up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been advised.

Melissa is the 13th hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in late autumn.

Category Five Cyclone Danger

A highest-level hurricane is the strongest type, with wind speeds of at least 157 miles per hour.

While Melissa is expected to diminish in strength to a category four storm before reaching the island, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the overall impacts" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "equally strong" when it hits the nation.

Critical Safety Steps

With tropical storm-strength wind and rainfall already expected well before it passes over the island's interior - including potentially the national capital - alerts state that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and intense precipitation have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and many landslides," advised climate experts.

The country's head of government the official said: "I know that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"But the best way to handle anxiety and any apprehension and concern is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to protect their properties with protective bags and timber panels, and to gather necessary supplies.

Broader Effects

Warnings are also active for regions of the neighboring country including the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is projected to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Mudslides already being caused by the hurricane have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Expected Path

This weather system is forecast to move across the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic.

By the point it arrives at Cuba, it is predicted to have diminished to a third-level hurricane.

Climate Background

While it is challenging to associate specific storms to environmental shifts, scientists say it is causing meteorological events increasingly frequent and more severe.

Increased sea temperatures create additional humidity in the air, helping fuel the development of storms.

Prior to the beginning of this year's Atlantic storm period, weather organizations projected higher-than-average occurrence, referencing warmer seas and likely stronger monsoon activity around West Africa - where hurricanes often form.
