Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for the Irish presidency, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Yet, Sunday night he announced via a statement he had "made a mistake which did not align with his character and the standards I set myself."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to withdraw from the presidential election contest right away and reunite with my loved ones," he said via a statement.

Further updates expected.
