The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes announced on this week.

Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
