The UK authorities has included 11 new destinations to its public alert register about the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.

This updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only recently, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after several serious events like the tragic death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a toxic chemical commonly used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for ingestion.

While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Official Guidance for Tourists

Government representative a senior official said that each tourist should be aware of the signs of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks in foreign countries, choose trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.

"If something seems unusual, for example a headache that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."
